Sophie Wallace, General Manager at Nordic, talks us through their latest masterpiece and explains why they continue to choose Mr Steam at their heart of their projects.
Commissioned by the wonderful ‘Alex McIntyre Architects’, Nordic were briefed to design, build, and install a bespoke steam room and sauna for a private client wanting the convenience and health benefits of wellness in their home.
We were asked to create a contemporary, softly lit, spacious and comfortable steam room for the client and their family to enjoy. The clean lines and angled benching lend itself well to a smart appearance alongside the soft pink tiles contrasting with the matt black hinges, handle, control, and linear steam outlet head.
We particularly like how easy the Mr Steam controls are to use with touchscreen technology and induvial programs for each member of the family. The AromaSteam Essence System by Mr Steam is literally aromatherapy at your fingertips and the program settings offer a real personal experience.

- Stay hydrated: Steam causes you to sweat, which may dehydrate you. Make sure to drink plenty of water both before your steam shower to maximize detoxification and after to replenish water lost to sweat.
- Use essential oils: Add your favourite oils to the steam generator to add aromatherapy to your experience. Always use essential oils responsibly. Don’t use oils if you have damaged skin and if you have an allergic reaction, don’t use that oil again.
- Set the mood: Dim the lights or use our ChromaTherapy add-on, choosing colours you find relaxing (blues and greens are often best). You can also use our MusicTherapy add-on to play quiet, soothing music. Experiment until you find the perfect combination.
- Gradual cooling: Don’t step out of the steam shower and immediately dry off. If you do, it will feel shockingly cold. Let your body cool down slowly and dry yourself steadily so you reacclimate to normal room temperature.

So, you’ve decided a steam shower would be a perfect addition to your home, but what do you need to know? Firstly, the Mr Steam UK team love talking about steam so don’t be afraid to just pick up the phone and start the conversation.
It would be great if you could provide us with some information to help understand what equipment would suit you best, so what does that look like?
WHAT INFORMATION WILL WE NEED?
The internal dimensions of the steam shower or steam room is essential to calculate the right size generator for you, so width, length, and height. Materials vary in thermal conductivity and porosity so be sure to share that with us, and if your chosen material changes along the way, that’s no problem, we can just re-calculate so we land on the perfect amount of steam!
Check if the power supply in your home is single-phase or three-phase, the good news is, either way, the price is the same we just want to ensure it all works perfectly once your new equipment is installed.
HOW DO I CHOOSE WHICH CONTROLLER I NEED?
We have a selection of controllers that range from a standard on/off, temperature control and timer to sophisticated touch-screen controllers loaded with apps.
HOW DO I CHOOSE?
The iTempo controller is perfect for those wanting to enjoy steam without any additional therapies. It is available in round or square and comes with a matching steam head.
If you fancy something a little more luxurious then you we do have the Linear Steam Head which looks great and provides a more gentle entry of steam. This is also perfect for small spaces as well as the use alongside large generators (sound reduction).
For those wanting to enjoy aromatherapy, Chromatherapy (light therapy) or music/audio, the iSteamX is loaded with apps such as Netflix and Spotify and is touch screen. So, you can enjoy your favourite show or playlist while you steam!
If your shower cubicle is already in place, it may be difficult to feed cables behind your wall. The AirTempo controller may be the solution in this case, as it works via Bluetooth and is completely wireless.
CAN I ACCESS THE CONTROLLER REMOTELY?
Yes! The Steam Linx is a web app module so you can control your steam shower from your smart phone or Alexa. Perfect for when you want the steam waiting for you or to save 2 trips to the bathroom!

Steam provides numerous health and wellness benefits. To enjoy your steam shower worry-free, you’ll want to do your due diligence before installing your new steam shower system.
To help you out, we’ve compiled this list of the top 10 things to consider before installing a steam shower so you can relax and fully enjoy your first steam.
WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE INSTALLING A STEAM SHOWER
- EASY ACCESS TO THE NECESSARY UTILITIES FOR THE STEAM GENERATOR
For starters, you need to make sure your steam generator will have access to plumbing and electricity. Plumbing connections include a water line to the steam generator, a steam line from the generator to the steam room, and a drain line from the generator. You will need a single phase 240 volt supply (or a three phase 415 volt supply) with a dedicated circuit breaker for the electrical supply.
- THE SHOWER CEILING HEIGHT
Ideally, a steam shower’s ceiling height should not exceed 2.2m. You can go as high as 2.4m, but that will require a higher-rated steam generator that can accommodate the larger volume of the space.

- PROPER SEALS ON THE SHOWER DOOR AND ANY WINDOWS
Make sure that your shower is fully enclosed and sealed so that water vapor doesn’t escape and lessen your steam experience. The seal on the door does not have to be airtight, but the shower doors should be watertight, and any windows need to be double-paned. A gap of 8-12mm on the underside of the door will allow colder air to meet the steam and assist density.
- WHAT TYPE OF WALL AND CEILING MATERIALS WILL YOU USE FOR YOUR SHOWER?
Avoid using porous materials like marble, granite, or concrete for your steam shower’s walls and ceiling. The higher the material’s porosity, the quicker it will dissipate heat and the larger a steam generator you will need. Use nonporous materials such as ceramic or porcelain tile that will retain heat instead.
- WHERE WILL THE STEAM GENERATOR AND COMPONENTS GO?
A MrSteam generator can be installed anywhere within 60 feet of the steam room, such as in a closet, vanity, or heated attic. Make sure it will be in an upright position. Do not install the generator inside the actual steam room or in an unheated (or uninsulated) location where water might freeze.
- WHERE WILL THE STEAM HEAD BE LOCATED?
The steam head should be located approximately six to twelve inches above the floor on a wall opposite the seating area and away from the entrance.

- WHERE WILL YOU POSITION YOUR STEAM CONTROL?
The steam shower control has an internal thermostat and controls the temperature of the space. It should be positioned away from the steam head, near the seating area in a location that is easy for the user to reach. Ask yourself where it will be most convenient for you to control your steam experience in the shower.
As a rule, keep the control between four and five feet above the floor and away from direct steam flow. MrSteam also offers the fully automated, water-resistant AirTempo wireless remote control.
- PREVENT SLIPS AND FALLS
Choose your shower floor material carefully and avoid slick, potentially slippery material. You can also add anti-skid strips on your steam room floor to mitigate the chance of slipping in the steam shower.
- REMEMBER THE SEATING!
The importance of seating in a steam shower cannot be overstated when it comes to relaxing and fully embracing the steam experience.
Built-in seating is optimal, and remember, if you do install a built-in bench, create a slight slope for drainage and comfort.
Some of these tips might seem basic, but they can be easily overlooked in the excitement of installing a steam shower. It’s important that you plan to avoid more costly fixes later. Taken together, these tips will allow you to make the most of your new steam shower.
